Lakeland Catholic School Division congratulates all athletes who competed, placed, and represented their communities with excellence at the Alberta Winter Games.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our schools for serving as venue hosts, and to the staff, students, and community volunteers whose time and dedication helped make the Games a success for Cold Lake, Bonnyville, and the Municipal District of Bonnyville.

Afternoon Bus Canceled 2025
Today we mark Shrove Tuesday, a time to pause, reflect, and prepare our hearts for the season of Lent.

As we enter this sacred season, we are reminded:

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10

May this season draw us closer to Christ and guide our schools in faith, hope, and love.

Morning Buses Cancelled 2025

Happy Family Day from all of us at Lakeland Catholic Schools.

Today, we give thanks for the gift of family, the place where we first learn love, forgiveness, faith, and service.

“As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
— Joshua 24:15

May this day be filled with gratitude and connection, rooted in the love we share as families and in keeping Christ at the centre of our homes and hearts.

Happy Valentine’s Day. ❤️

At the centre of our faith is Jesus Christ, who teaches us what love truly looks like through sacrifice, mercy, and service.

“Let all that you do be done in love.” — 1 Corinthians 16:14

In our classrooms, in our homes, and in our daily interactions, we are called to reflect His love in the way we care for one another.

St. Teresa of Calcutta reminds us:
“Do small things with great love.”

It is often these quiet, faithful acts that reveal Christ most clearly and shape our community in lasting ways.

May we continue to follow His example, placing Him at the heart of all we do.

During Black History Month, we honour the life and witness of St. Josephine Bakhita, a woman of profound faith, resilience, and compassion.

Once enslaved, she later became a religious sister whose life reflected forgiveness, humility, and unwavering trust in God.

“May her example inspire us to carry our cross and to love always.”

At Lakeland Catholic, we are reminded that faith and action go hand in hand, and that compassion, dignity, and hope must guide all we do.

Economic Justice reminds us that fairness and dignity must be at the heart of how communities function.

This Catholic Social Teaching calls us to consider how resources are shared, how work is valued, and how decisions impact those most in need. It challenges us to ensure that economic systems serve people and uphold human dignity.

In our schools, Economic Justice is reflected through responsible stewardship, fairness, and learning to make choices that respect the dignity of others.

✨ Community & Connection in Our Schools ✨

This week across Lakeland Catholic schools, students celebrated what it means to care, connect, and belong.

At Holy Cross Elementary and St. Dominic Elementary in Cold Lake, students got an early start on Family Day by creating custom bookmarks — using art to share what family means to them.

At Dr. Brosseau School in Bonnyville, the focus was on friendship and kindness. Students designed friendship bracelets, choosing to keep them as a reminder or gift them to a friend as a simple act of kindness.

A heartfelt thank you to Paola and Oksana from Action for Healthy Communities for leading these meaningful activities, and to System Excellence Coordinator Sherry Depner for her ongoing dedication to strengthening connections between our schools and community partners.

Across Lakeland Catholic Schools today, staff are taking part in Pathways to Excellence professional learning — a dedicated day focused on enhancing student learning.

These days begin with faith formation, grounding our work in the belief that Christ is our Model and children are our focus. Educators then come together to focus on literacy and numeracy, strengthen classroom practice, and share approaches that support student success across grades and schools.

Pathways to Excellence days are intentional and purposeful. They provide time for collaboration, reflection, and alignment so learning remains consistent, meaningful, and responsive to student needs.

This work matters. It supports teachers, strengthens classrooms, and directly benefits students — academically, socially, and spiritually.

Over the past few weeks the students in Grades 5 and 6 have been capitalizing on all the snow that we have this winter! Before heading out we examined traditional snowshoes that were invented by the Indigenous people, and discussed how this invention was created to make it easier for them to hunt and move around in the deep snow during the winter months. Students have thoroughly enjoyed this experience and have definitely improved their ability to move in the snowshoes, with some students even trying to run in them!

Today is Family Literacy Day! May we celebrate the precious gift of reading together as families. Whether it’s reading a bedtime story, sharing Scripture, or exploring a new book, these moments nurture faith, connection, and curiosity.
