We are grateful to Fr. René for celebrating Mass with our students and helping begin the day centred in Christ. Students then took part in group discussions exploring what it means to be Chosen by God, Made for More, and the life of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, Patron Saint of Indigenous Peoples.
The day continued with lunch, games and Praise & Worship before each school’s IGNITE team came together to plan how they will help lead faith formation within their school communities throughout the year.
We can’t wait to see how these student leaders bring their faith, ideas and energy back to their schools!

Today, staff across Lakeland Catholic came together for Pathways to Excellence, a Division-wide professional learning day grounded in faith, relationship and a shared commitment to the students we serve.
The day began with faith formation centred on St. Gregory the Great and Dorothy Day, inviting staff to reflect on their vocation as Catholic educators and the responsibility that comes with being entrusted with the learning, growth and well-being of students. Through their examples of servant leadership, compassion and accompaniment, staff reflected on what it means to truly know the students in their care, to recognize the dignity of each person and to see Christ in those before us. It was an opportunity to consider how our Catholic faith shapes not only what we do, but how we show up for one another and for our students each day.
Staff then came together in Communities of Practice, creating dedicated space to learn with and from colleagues, share expertise and engage in the thoughtful, collaborative work that strengthens teaching and learning across our schools.
As we approach the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the afternoon placed a meaningful focus on Indigenous Relations and Indigenous Ways of Knowing. Staff participated in a Division-wide session with Jason J Bigcharles, Indigenous storyteller and leader in the development of Indigenous Culture Based Learning, before continuing their learning within schools alongside Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers and community partners.
Pathways to Excellence reflects the kind of learning we value at Lakeland Catholic: faith-filled, relational and purposeful. This time allows our staff to deepen their vocation as Catholic educators, learn alongside one another, build meaningful relationships and better understand the students and communities they are called to serve.

Throughout the day, teachers explored active and innovative teaching methods to support LCSD’s pilot of Alberta Education’s draft Grade 7–9 Physical Education & Wellness curriculum.

Fifty students from Lakeland Catholic travelled to Edmonton to participate in From Roots We Rise: A Youth Gathering 2026 at the Edmonton EXPO Centre.
Hosted as part of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) programming, the gathering centred on the theme Good Health and Wellbeing, encouraging students to explore balance across physical, spiritual, emotional and mental wellness while deepening their understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories and lived experiences.
A deeply moving part of the gathering was The Red Scroll Memorial, a 50-metre red fabric banner unveiled by the NCTR and inscribed with the names of 2,800 Indigenous children who died in residential schools. The memorial honours the children who never came home. Our students approached this experience with reverence and respect as they gathered at the memorial and listened to the lived experiences shared by Residential School Survivors.
Throughout the day, students experienced Indigenous culture, community and storytelling through music and dance. Hosted by Mimi O’Bonsawin and Lance Cardinal, the gathering featured Neon Dreams, Julian Taylor, the Stoney Bear Singers, the Ivan Flett Memorial Dancers and Northern Cree, the internationally recognized powwow and Round Dance group founded in 1982 by brothers from Saddle Lake.
Between main-stage sessions, students explored activities throughout the concourse, including a Jumpstart Celebrity Meet & Greet with Olympic snowboarder Liam Gill and former NHL player and Stanley Cup Champion Jordan Nolan.
As a Catholic school community, we are called to listen with humility, honour the dignity of every person and seek truth as we continue the important work of reconciliation. Opportunities such as this allow our students to learn directly from Indigenous voices and experiences, strengthen understanding and carry those lessons forward in their schools and communities.
We are incredibly proud of our students for the respect, thoughtfulness and maturity they demonstrated throughout the gathering and for their commitment to listening, learning and walking together in reconciliation.

There’s plenty of energy at École Dr. Brosseau Catholic School as new and returning students come together for the start of the 2026–2027 school year.
A first-day pep rally brought our Bobcats together to celebrate their school, build some spirit and kick off the year as one community. Superintendent Sheldon Germain also stopped by to welcome students and staff and remind them of something important as they begin the year: each of them is a gift from God.
We’re especially happy to welcome the new students and families joining our Bobcat community this year. We’re glad you’re here!
There’s lots to look forward to, and we can’t wait to see what our students will learn, accomplish and experience together.

With 179 students already enrolled, this is just the beginning. Soccer, softball and golf are still to come throughout the school year.

Students and families interested in Hockey or Volleyball are invited to a brief season kick-off at 5:00 PM in the school gym. Learn about upcoming schedules, program information and what athletes and families can expect as we get ready for the season.
